Find out what kind of relationship between shipping and trade existed in antiquity. Where and what goods were transported along the rivers?

Trade existed thanks to shipping. Through the lands inhabited by the Eastern Slavs along the Neva, Lake Ladoga, Volkhov, Lovati and the Dnieper, there was a trade route “from the Varangians to the Greeks”, connecting the Varangian (Baltic) Sea with the Russian (Black) Sea. The end point of this great waterway was wealthy Byzantium, a place of lucrative trade. Among the Slavs, people began to appear who acquired furs of fur animals, honey and wax of forest bees and other gifts of the forest from their fellow tribesmen, and then took them to the markets of Byzantium, Khazaria and even Baghdad. There they exchanged these goods for silk fabrics, gold, wines, vegetables, and expensive weapons.
