| In order to find the coordinates of the intersection point of the graphs of the functions y = -x / 3 and y = x – 4, we solve the system of equations:
y = x – 4;
y = -x / 3.
To solve the system of equations, we will use the substitution method.
System of equations:
-x / 3 = x – 4;
y = -x / 3.
We solve the first equation of the system:
-x / 3 = x – 4;
-x = 3 (x – 4);
-x = 3x – 12;
-x – 3x = -12;
x (-1 – 3) = -12;
-4x = -12;
x = -12: (-4);
x = 3.
System of equations:
x = 3;
y = -x / 3 = -3/3 = -1.
