A rectangular triangle is a triangle in which one corner is a straight line (equal to 90º).
According to the Pythagorean theorem, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the legs:
AB ^ 2 = BC ^ 2 + AC ^ 2;
AB ^ 2 = 9 ^ 2 + 12 ^ 2 = 81 + 144 = 225;
AB = √225 = 15 cm.
Answer: the length of the hypotenuse AB is 15 cm.
