Find the length of the rectangle if its perimeter is 64 cm and the width is 8 cm. Find the side of the square if its perimeter is 84 cm.

1) Denote by x the length of the rectangle.
According to the condition of the problem, the perimeter of this rectangle is 64 cm, and the width of this rectangle is 8 cm, therefore, we can draw up the following equation:
2 * (x + 8) = 64.
We solve the resulting equation:
x + 8 = 64/2;
x + 8 = 32;
x = 32 – 8;
x = 24 cm.
2) Denote by y the length of the side of the square.
According to the condition of the problem, the perimeter of the square is 84 cm, therefore, we can draw up the following equation:
4 * y = 84.
We solve the resulting equation:
y = 84/4;
y = 21 cm.
Answer: the length of the rectangle is 24 cm, the side of the square is 21 cm.
