1. Let us write down the equation of the proceeding reaction:
Mg + 2HCl = MgCl2 + H2 ↑;
2.Calculate the mass of magnesium without impurities:
m (Mg) = w (Mg) * m (sample);
w (Mg) = 1 – w (impurities) = 1 – 0.2 = 0.8;
m (Mg) = 0.8 * 15 = 12 g;
3. find the chemical amount of magnesium:
n (Mg) = m (Mg): M (Mg) = 12: 24 = 0.5 mol;
4. Determine the amount and calculate the mass of the obtained magnesium chloride:
n (MgCl2) = n (Mg) = 0.5 mol;
m (MgCl2) = n (MgCl2) * M (MgCl2);
M (MgCl2) = 24 + 35.5 * 2 = 95 g / mol;
m (MgCl2) = 0.5 * 95 = 47.5 g.
