Find the side of the rectangle if its perimeter is 21.6 meters, one of the sides is 3 meters larger.

From the condition, we know the perimeter of the rectangle and it is equal to 21.6 meters, and it is also known that one of the sides of the rectangle is 3 meters larger than the second.

In order to find the sides of a rectangle we have to solve a linear equation.

Let’s denote by x the length of one of the sides of the rectangle, then the other side can be written as (x + 3).

Formula for finding the perimeter of a rectangle:

P = 2 (a + b);

Substitute and calculate:

2 (x + x + 3) = 21.6;

2 (2x + 3) = 21.6;

2x + 3 = 21.6: 2;

2x + 3 = 10.8;

2x = 10.8 – 3;

2x = 7.8;

x = 7.8: 2;

x = 3.9 meters the length of one of the sides, 3.9 + 3 = 6.9 meters the length of the second side.
