Find the sides of a rectangle if you know that its area is 50m ^ 2 and one of its sides is 5m larger than the other.

| Let’s write one of the sides of the rectangle as x cm.
Since the second side is 5 cm smaller, its length will be: x – 5 cm.
The product of the sides of a rectangle is its area.
We get the equation:
x – (x – 5) = 50.
x ^ 2 – 5 * x = 50.
x ^ 2 – 5 * x – 50 = 0.
D ^ 2 = 25 – 4 * 1 * (-50) = 225.
D = 15.
x = 5 + 15/2 = 10 cm (first side).
x – 5 = 10 – 5 = 5 cm (second side).
Verification of the solution.
5 * 10 = 50 cm ^ 2.
Answer: The sides of the rectangle are 10 cm and 5 cm.
