For the repair of two houses, we bought linoleum with a total area of 1500m². The repair of one house took 2 times more square meters of linoleum than the repair of another house. How many square meters of linoleum were used to renovate each house.
Suppose we spent x (x) m² of linoleum on the repair of one house, then on the repair of the second house: (x · 2) m². Knowing the total area of the purchased linoleum (1500 m2), we will draw up the equation:
x + x2 = 1500;
x 3 = 1500;
x = 1500: 3;
x = 500 (m²) – went to repair the first house.
We find out how many square meters of linoleum were spent on repairing the second house: x · 2 = 500 · 2 = 1000 or 1500 – 500 = 1000 (m²).
Answer: 500 m² of linoleum was used to renovate the first house and 1000 m² to renovate the second house.
