From the two piers, two motor ships simultaneously set off towards each other. The distance between the quays is 474 km. The speed of one motor ship is 42 km / h. What way did each ship go before the meeting, if they met after 6 hours?

1) Let’s calculate the speed of approach of motor ships: 474: 6 = 79 (km / h);

2) Determine the speed of the second motor ship: 79 – 42 = 37 (km / h);

3) Find out how many km the first motor ship passed before the meeting: 42 · 6 = 252 (km);

4) Let’s find the distance that the second motor ship traveled to meet: 37 6 = 222 or 474 – 252 = 222 (km).

Answer: the first motor ship passed 252 km before the meeting, and the second – 222 km.
