Give a description of the slave system in the Ancient World.

In the states of the Ancient World, slaves were referred to as dumb livestock. The value of their lives was determined by their utility in relation to their master. Slaves were recruited for the most difficult and dirtiest work, the overwhelming majority of them lived in terrible conditions. Their very life and fate depended entirely on the whims of their masters. Often in ancient Rome, slaves were used for gladiatorial games to entertain the crowd. Somewhat better was the position of educated slaves, whom could be used for the profit of the masters.
The number of slaves was replenished as a result of successful external wars.
