Animals have a heterotrophic type of diet. This means that they cannot synthesize organic substances themselves. They eat autotrophs. There are herbivores. There are also predators. Predators receive organic matter from autotrophs not directly, but through intermediaries – herbivores. Food chains can be quite large. There are also animals that are parasites. They live off other organisms and can often harm them. There are also animals that create symbiosis with other living organisms.
