Since ancient times, people have used the natural topography of the earth to protect their lands. So settlements were built near the mountains to protect themselves from strong winds and enemy attacks. Castles were built on a hill to make them impregnable from all sides. The dwellings were built on stable plots of land that were not subject to erosion. The farms were placed on level ground so that the herd could be monitored.
