Examples of zoning on the continents are natural zones – humid equatorial forests, variable-humid forests, savannas and woodlands, a zone of deserts and semi-deserts, a zone of evergreen stiff-leaved shrubs (for example, Africa). Examples of zoning in the ocean – zoning according to the distribution of organisms from surface to bottom – plankton on the surface, then nekton (free-floating organisms), benthos (organisms living on the bottom).
