| Half of the perimeter of the rectangle is 16 dm. Find the perimeter of the rectangle. Find the lengths of its sides if one is less than the other by 6 dm.
1. Find the perimeter of the rectangle, if half is 16 dm, for this we multiply 16 dm by 2:
Perimeter = 16 dm * 2 = 32 dm.
2. Let one of the adjacent sides of the rectangle be equal to x, then the other is equal to 6 + x. Doubling the sum of adjacent sides gives the perimeter. Let’s make an equation, find x:
2 * (x + 6 + x) = 32,
2 * (6 + 2x) = 32,
12 + 4x = 32,
4x = 32 – 12,
4x = 20,
x = 20/4,
x = 5 dm.
3. Find the second adjacent side:
6 + 5 = 11 dm.
Answer: the perimeter of the rectangle is 32 dm, and its adjacent sides are 11 dm and 5 dm.
