How and why did Charlemagne’s empire collapse?

The empire of Charlemagne collapsed due to internecine wars between the sons of the emperor and the feudal lords. As a result, the vast territory was divided into three. The final disintegration was officially approved in 843. The Treaty of Verdun was concluded between the sons of Charles. According to him, one of the brothers received German lands, the second got parts of the future France and Italy. The third brother received land in the western part of the former empire. It is part of the future Spain and the western side of the future France.
