How and why did the Christian church become divided?

The split of the Christian Church occurred due to a disagreement between the Pope and the Patriarch of Constantinople, each of whom established his own sphere of influence (Rome – in the west, Constantinople – in the east), and did not want to either concede it to another, nor obey him, therefore in 1054 both sides anathematized each other.
