How are acid and salt similar and different in composition?

An acid is a substance that gives H + ions when dissolved in water. Acids are compounds that contain hydrogen (hydrochloric, HCl, sulfuric, H2SO4, nitric, HNO3). However, not all compounds containing hydrogen are acids (water, H2O, methane, CH4). Acids are usually compounds of a non-metal with hydrogen, and sometimes with oxygen.

Salt is formed when an acid reacts with a base. Both are neutralized. Ions H + and OH – combine to form water. Non-metallic acid ions and base metal ions form a salt.
