How are mushrooms related to trees?

Most mushrooms in the forest are associated with trees in that the filaments of their myceliums grow together with the roots of trees. Thus, myceliums help trees to absorb mineral salts and water from the soil. And the roots of trees, in turn, help the fungi get the nutrients that plants produce in the light.
