How are oxides formed?

Oxides are some of the most common complex chemicals in inorganic chemistry. Oxygen atoms (O), which have an oxidation state of -2, are an obligatory constituent part of the oxides. Oxides are formed as a result of combustion reactions: CS2 + 4O2 = CO2 + 2SO3. Also, these chemicals are the product of the reaction of some metals with hydrogen oxide (water – H2O): 2Li + H2O = Li2O + H2. Oxides are also formed during the direct interaction of oxygen with other substances: O2 + 2H2 = 2H2O.
