How are the travels of Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus related?

The connection between their travels is believed to be that both of them sailed to North America. However, today it is almost proven that the Venetian merchant Marco Polo could have visited America much earlier than Christopher Columbus, ahead of him by as much as two centuries. This was stated by historians of the FBI of the United States, having examined in 1943 a map by Polo, given for preservation to the Library of National Congress of the United States. He applied most of North America to it. If all is true, then Columbus’s palm for opening a new continent is now under threat.
