How can you get out of the forest without a compass?

There are four cardinal directions – north, south, west and east. Knowing the sides of the horizon, you can determine your location, but you do not need to use a compass for this, you can use maps, as well as methods of orientation on the terrain according to folk signs – plants, relief, sun, stars, and so on.

Here’s an example: The bark of a birch or aspen is lighter and smoother on the south side. On the north side of the tree, you can usually find moss, lichens, it looks darker, coarser, there are roughness. These signs are easier to spot on light-barked trees. However, it is worth remembering that it is more expedient to determine the cardinal points using this principle not in a dense forest, but by studying detached trees that receive more solar energy.

Having determined the side of the world, you can go in the direction necessary for the traveler.
