How did England and France compete for supremacy in Europe and in the world?

The first major war between England and France was the Hundred Years in 1337-1453, de jure it ended in 1475 after the unsuccessful campaign of the English king in Picardy. The war ended with the victory of France, and 100 years later, in the 1550s, the British lost the city of Calais.

In the Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648) England supported the French Protestants (Huguenots).
The War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) ended with an English effort, as did the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763). The British received Gibraltar and part of the French colonies in North America and India.
