How did Philip II manage to turn Macedonia into a powerful state?

In the 4th century BC. on the territory of the Balkans, the young state of Macedonia began to gain power. His rise took place during the reign of Tsar Philip II, who carried out a military reform. Thus, the Macedonian phalanx arose, which turned out to be more effective than the usual Greek phalanx of the hoplites. Soon the Macedonians were able to subjugate most of the Greek city-states and create a strong state.
