How did plebeians fight for equal rights with patricians?

In 449 BC, the plebeians ensured that all existing laws were engraved on 12 copper tablets, and then put on display. Such a measure protected them from the arbitrariness of the patricians, in whose hands the judicial power was. Now the patricians could not break the law, as anyone could see it.
