After the Russian lands were conquered by the Mongols, Kievan Rus became dependent on the horde. Political dependence was manifested in the fact that now Russia was a vassal of the Golden Horde. Economic dependence proceeded from the fact that during that period Russia had to pay an annual tribute, especially since many trade routes were under the control of the Mongol-Tatars.
