How did Solon ease the lot of the common people?

First, he introduced the following law: any person could become an archon, any person with money could become an archon. For example, one who got rich on the sea trade. Secondly, (this is the most important reform), he canceled all debts and freed debtors from slavery, banned debt slavery. This eased social tensions and improved the economic situation of the state. Artisans from other cities who arrived in Athens were allowed to settle in the city. He banned the export of grain from Athens and encouraged olive growing. Thanks to Solon’s measures, olive growing subsequently turned into a thriving agricultural industry.
