The Portuguese and Spaniards seized the lands discovered by them in a barbaric way. They massively exploited the population and used the colonies as raw material bases and markets. The English, French and Dutch colonialists used more loyal methods of submission. Basically, the colonialists were private trade associations, which introduced rather tolerant conditions for interaction between the colony and the metropolis. The state only supported trading companies financially.
