How did the Assyrians feel about the conquered peoples?

The Assyrians, in general, treated the conquered peoples quite cruelly and tried to keep them submissive with the help of violence. For the Assyrian kings, as can be seen from the cuneiform records, the deportation of an entire people or a separate part of it to other lands, the deprivation of the property of an entire city and the execution of civilians to intimidate the rest were a matter of pride. They also took gifted craftsmen to Assyria itself and used the power of the conquered to build roads, canals and defensive structures.
