How did the Athenians and how the Spartans respond to the demands of the Persians?

In 491-492 BC. NS. The great Persian king Darius decided to conquer the split into parts of Hellas, and therefore sends his faithful ambassadors to all autonomous Greek city-states with a statement that their king demands “land and water.” Given the power of the Persians, most of the cities of ancient Hellas agreed to the insulting demands. Only militant Sparta and Athens refused. Herodotus testified in his historical writings that in Athens the Persian ambassadors were executed immediately after the trial, while in Sparta they acted even more mercilessly: the Persians were thrown into a deep well, advised to find both land and water there.
