How did the cities of the Middle Ages arise?

Cities in the Middle Ages arose in several ways. Some of the cities survived the Great Migration of Nations and remained from antiquity, while the other part was formed from villages, they began to grow stronger, the number of inhabitants increased, signs of cities of that time appeared. There was also another rare variety of them; on the ruins of ancient fortifications, the barbarians began to establish their settlements, which grew into cities.
