How did the dominant position of religion and the Church in the spiritual sphere of the Middle Ages affect the content of scientific knowledge?

This position of the church played a twofold role. On the one hand, monasteries in the Middle Ages became the center of science and education (books were kept there, monks were engaged in rewriting them, they could get acquainted with the works of ancient thinkers). On the other hand, the church, preserving its dominant position, later became a brake on the development of progress: inappropriate provisions on the universe (geocentrism, the possibility of spontaneous generation of life) were proclaimed dogma, the opponents of which were severely persecuted by the court of the Inquisition.
