How did the Franks divide up the spoils of war?

The Franks had a tradition: the king did not have any special rights to the booty, it was divided equally among the soldiers by lot. This can be seen in the story about the Soissons cup, when, at the request of the king to give him the cup in addition to his share, one soldier cut it with an ax and said: “You will receive from here only what is due to you by lot.”
