How did the Indians explain the emergence of castes?

The Indians explained the emergence of castes with the help of religion. According to the myth, four varnas originated from the god Brahma. From his mouth arose brahmanas (priests), from his hands – kshatriyas (warriors), from his thighs – vaisyas (farmers), and from his feet – sudras (servants). In each of the varnas, over time, different subgroups appeared. It was they who received the foreign name “caste”. Each such subgroup had a fixed occupation and occupied a certain place in society. This order was guarded by religion and mythology.
