In all countries, the beginning of the war caused uplifting and a wave of patriotism among the population. In England, the people expected the development of trade. The French remembered the defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. In Russia, the liberation of the Slavs from the oppression of Austria was considered sacred. The Germans were worried about the creation of the Entente and its threat to their expansion in Europe and Africa. Turkey and Austria-Hungary needed an external enemy to preserve their decaying empires. The Bulgarians, claiming to be the leader of the Balkans, hoped to strengthen their positions.
