How did the Varangians appear on the lands of the Eastern Slavs? What did they do?

The Varangians arrived in the lands of the Eastern Slavs in two ways, either by sailing along the coast of Europe, and swimming as far as possible, as far as the Dnieper, or ascending to the sources of their rivers and further on horseback or on foot. The main occupations of the Varangians were trade and mercenaries. Trade usually consisted of transporting goods to the north, normal for the south, in Greece and Turkey, such as spices, grape wine, ceramics, and from the north came furs, amber, and iron. The mercenaries, on the other hand, had many advantages over the locals; they did not have tribal ambitions and the ability to satisfy the ambitions of occupying positions. They didn’t get any benefit at all from killing the employer, so they served the best.
