How do new cells appear during cleavage?

After fertilization, a zygote is formed. Almost immediately, it begins to divide multiple times by mitosis. Cells do not grow between divisions, so with each division they become smaller. These cells are called blastomeres, and the stage of development of the embryo at which they are formed is cleavage.
