How do you assess the role of Caesar in Roman history?

Guy Julius Caesar occupies one of the most prominent places in Roman history. In addition to the brilliant victories over the Gauls tribes and the annexation of vast territories to the Roman republic, Caesar laid the foundations of the monarchy. His military leadership went down in history. It was Caesar who introduced the new calendar (Julian). He also sought to streamline the administration of the state.
