How does an icon differ from a painting?

In painting, a painting is a work of art that can contain religious themes. This is the object with which the artist conveys his attitude. An artist can and should show creative features, capabilities, his talent, individuality. The icon has a special meaning precisely in Orthodoxy – it is a direct appeal to God. A man in front of an icon depicting the Lord sees only Him and communicates with Him, there is no question of the author here. The icon painter must observe all the canons, create with faith.
