How does modernism differ from realism?

Modernism manifested itself in the late 19th – early 20th century. It replaced realism. Realists tried to present life in their works as believable as possible. They gave a lot of attention to social relationships. Modernism tried to convey a new attitude that arose at the turn of the century. New discoveries in the fields of science and philosophy influenced the aesthetics of modernism. They tried to get closer to the invisible sides of reality (symbolism) or to portray life in the future (futurism).
