The shortest shadow is cast by the tree at noon, the longer one in the morning and evening. The lower the sun is above the horizon, the longer the shadow. By the direction of the shadow, one can judge the sides of the horizon: at noon the sun shines from the south, in the morning – from the east, in the evening – from the west.
