Courage is a character trait, while heroism is a sudden manifestation of altruism. A person who lacks courage in character traits can go for heroism. Moreover, this manifestation of heroism may be unconscious. For example, a person passing by will break into a burning house in order to try to save the survivors, despite the fact that this person is not an employee of the Ministry of Emergencies and does not have such determination in life.
