How is excitement transmitted through the nervous system?

An electrical impulse in the nervous system is transmitted along a chain of nerve fibers that are formed from axons. At the junctions of nerve cells, chemical synapses form, where an electrical impulse releases a chemical transmitter, such as acetylcholine. There are also electrical synapses in which the transmission of an electrical impulse takes place directly due to the close contact between cells. There are also ways of transmission through the release of neuropeptide chemicals.
