The gray matter of the brain is a key element of the central nervous system and includes the following components:

1) cell bodies of neurons;

2) glial cells, which include oligodendrocytes and astrocytes;

3) neuropil or processes of nerve cells, including processes of glial cells, myelin-free axons and dendrites;

4) capillaries.

The white matter is formed mainly by bundles of myelin fibers located between the basal nuclei and the cerebral cortex.
