How is the structure of various connective tissues related to their functions?
There are 5 types of connective tissue: dense fibrous, loose fibrous, cartilaginous, bone tissue, blood and lymph. In dense fibrous tissue, the close arrangement of fibers in the bundle allows to perform an integumentary and protective function, and softness and elasticity – to form tendons, ligaments, blood vessels and etc. In loose fibrous tissue, the large distance between the fibers allows the space between the organs to be filled to connect the skin to the muscles. Cell capsules and intercellular substance in the cartilage tissue protect organs from deformation and smooth rubbing surfaces. Bone tissue, the cells of which are tightly interconnected, provides motor, support and protective function. Liquid blood and lymph can freely flow through the body, carrying nutrients, oxygen, participate in immunity, carry hormones and remove carbon dioxide.
