How is the transmission of a nerve impulse carried out?

Nerve impulses are transmitted from the brain to the “destination” – the cells – according to the potential of electrical action, spreading in waves along the axon of the neuron to one or more terminals that are connected to other neural dendrites (and so on along the line). In the dendrites, a neurotransmitter is released – a chemical (such as acetylcholine) that crosses the synapse and enters the connected neuron, which may or may not, depending on other signals received by the neuron, initiate another action potential.
