The state of Atropatena was originally formed in the territories of ancient Manna in the northwest of modern Iran. During the time of Alexander the Great, these territories were called nothing else but “Media Atropatena” or “Atropatskaya Media”. A state with a similar name is known during the reign of the Seleucids.
