Each sperm contains DNA, which is packed into 23 chromosomes. They are located in front of the sperm cell (in the head). They have the ability to fertilize in the first 48 hours. Further, the odds decrease exponentially. The sperm head contains substances that help to get inside the egg. The egg also has 23 chromosomes. That is, we get 23 chromosomes from the mother and 23 chromosomes from the father. Accordingly, the zygote, after the fusion of the egg and sperm, has 23 pairs of chromosomes.
