Chromosomes are strands of DNA that are packaged in a special way for more reliable transmission during sexual and asexual reproduction. Each species of animals and plants has an individual number of chromosomes. In humans, these are 46 chromosomes, in a pigeon – 16, in a horse – 64, in a cat – 38. Plants also have a certain number of chromosomes. The potato has 48 chromosomes, the banana has 22. The apple tree, unlike most living organisms, has an unpaired number of chromosomes – 15. If an organism has fewer or more chromosomes, then genetic abnormalities appear.
