How many countries are there in North America?

At the moment, there are twenty-three sovereign North American states. The continent’s territory is disproportionately divided between countries. Thus, the entire continent has an area of about twenty-four million square kilometers, and of which about twenty million kilometers are occupied only by the United States and Canada. Another two million kilometers are in Mexico, while the remaining twenty states (Costa Rica, Panama, etc.) are located on a relatively small, southern extremity of the mainland.
