How many legs does a caterpillar have?

Like all insects, caterpillars have six legs extending from their thorax. The problem is that they also have gnarled lumps that come out of their belly. Technically, these are not real legs, although they have the same function.
Monarch Caterpillar – This caterpillar is always found in some species of thrush (Asclepias spp.). They are not that hard to spot, their bright streaks of black, white and yellow. The milk fed by monarchs is protected by a poisonous sap, which in turn makes the monarch’s caterpillars poisonous to any potential predators.
Caterpillar – The black dovetail caterpillar eats the leaves of carrots and other Umbelliferae species, which gives them little protection. It is believed that the black dovetail caterpillar mimics the monarch’s caterpillar, so birds and other predators can leave it alone.
Sycamore Tussock Moth Caterpillar – This species is quite common in parts of the United States. You will most likely find him wandering around looking for a safe place to make a cocoon. The moth is quite brownish-cream in color and is part of the genus Halysidota, which includes many similar species.
